How to Create a Standout Poster
✔ DO: Keep text to a minimum. Your colleagues have a lot of posters to read; make yours as impactful as possible in the brief amount of time they will see it.
❌ DON'T: Be afraid of white space. It makes your poster easier to read.
✔ DO: Pare it down. The more you cram in, the less likely it is to be read, so edit out anything extraneous. Think of your poster as an illustrated abstract. Use bullet points.
❌ DON'T: Deviate from the NECO template colors and fonts.
✔ DO: Use the largest font size possible. 28+ for standard posters/24+ for Academy posters are ideal, but if you're using under 24 for standard posters/22.5 for Academy posters, and don't have a significant number of graphics, you have too many words.
✔ DO: Make it visually appealing. Graphics should take precedence over text. Make sure your graphics are appropriate for the scale of your poster: most small JPGs become pixelated when enlarged, so they should be a minimum of 200 dpi to begin with. Important: do not enlarge photos directly in PowerPoint. You can, however, create graphs and charts directly in PowerPoint, and they can be enlarged without loss of resolution.
✔ DO: View your poster at 100% or slightly higher within PowerPoint to ensure that your images are not pixelated (go to View > Zoom > 100%).
